MISSA SUPRA DIXIT MARIA

Sunday,  January 7, 2018  5:00 PM

ST. BASIL CATHOLIC CHURCH, LOS ANGELES

Credo Catholic Choir will be singing the Missa supra Dixit Maria by Hans Leo Hassler on January 7, 2018, at the 5:00 Mass at St. Basil Catholic Church. The Missa supra Dixit Maria uses a theme from one of Hassler’s most beautiful motets, “Dixit Maria.” Credo will sing the motet, “Dixit Maria,” and Christmas carols to celebrate the Epiphany. There will be a 10 minute Prelude of Christmas music before the Mass begins.

St. Basil Parish (3611 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90005) was established in 1919 and the current church building was completed in 1969. The interior of St. Basil Church features soaring ceilings and is reminiscent of a European cathedral in size and acoustics. The organ was designed by Justin Kramer and partially rebuilt by Rosales Organ Builders from 2006-2013.

FAURÉ REQUIEM sung for the All Souls' Mass

Thursday,  November 2, 2017  7:30 PM

ST. THERESE CHURCH, ALHAMBRA

Credo Choir will join St. Therese Traditional Choir to sing the Fauré Requiem in celebration of All Souls’ Day on November 2, 2017, at 7:30 p.m. The choir will be joined by a harpist and violinist. The congregation is invited to light a candle and place it at the foot of the altar in memory of loved ones who have passed away. This time of meditation and prayer before Mass will be accompanied by harp and violin music. Julio Ortiz is the soloist for the “Libera Me,” sung as the final prelude before the Mass begins.

At 7:30, Koert Halpin will intone the names of those who have passed away at St. Therese Parish in the past year. The Mass will begin with the “Introit” and “Kyrie” movements of the Fauré Requiem. Genevieve Grimm will sing the poignant “Pie Jesu” at Offertory, followed by Bruckner’s “Locus Iste” (In this place), sung by the combined choirs. The soaringly transcendent “Sanctus” follows, and the “Agnus Dei” and “Lux Aeterna” are sung at the proper times in the Mass. The communion reflection is the triumphant Early American spiritual “Bright Morning Stars Are Rising” (arranged by Music Director, Charlotte Lansberg), and the Mass concludes with a prayer for all the faithful departed souls to enter into Paradise, “In Paradisum.”

MISSA CANTATA

Sunday,  July 2, 2017  11:00 AM

ST. THERESE CHURCH, ALHAMBRA

Credo will sing a Missa Cantata at St. Therese Church on July 2 at 11:00 a.m. The featured Mass (Fr. Duran’s Missa del Quarto Tono) was composed by a Franciscan priest for the California Missions in the early 1800’s and sung by the Mission choirs. Credo will also sing the folk-like 4 part setting of Dios Te Salve (Ave Maria), O Sacratisimo Cuerpo, and a motet (Christum Regem) by Manuel de Sumaya, the most famous Mexican-born composer of the colonial period of New Spain.

THE SEVEN WORDS FROM THE CROSS

MISSION SAN BUENAVENTURA

Credo Catholic Choir presents “The Seven Words from the Cross” by composer Knut Nystedt.  Written in 1960, this piece is a musical setting of Jesus’ last words as he hung dying on the cross. The choir sings the “words” (actually short phrases,) and the Evangelist, sung by Fr. Albert Van der Woerd, chants the Gospel readings. The choir will also sing motets by Lotti, Bach, Crüger, Victoria and Hassler. In between the “words,” a candle will be extinguished. The final meditation is a composition by Arvo PÃ¥rt for violin and piano, “Spiegel Im Spiegel,” (Mirror in the Mirror.)
